Student work by Lizzy Ziemer.

The objectives of this project are to to create one large work out of smaller, individual pieces, to pay careful attention to craft and to fully execute a complex visual problem, from concept to presentation.

Supplies are due in class by Monday Feb. 11.  They include prepared surfaces to paint on, paints and mediums, reference materials and idea sketches.

Process:

Choose the surface on which you will paint.  Possible surfaces include, but are not limited to, paper, wood, canvas, found objects and a mix of surfaces.  Most surfaces will need to be prepared with several layers of gesso. An exception to this would be if you plan to use a water-based medium like watercolor or paint made from food pigments (beet juice, coffee, etc.). It’s important to consider how the surface and paint medium will work together, both technically and conceptually.

One of the objectives of this project is attention to craft.  This includes getting the piece ready for exhibition.  You will need to  determine how your piece will hang and add the necessary hardware to the piece.  It also means sanding edges if necessary and finishing things off in the way that best serves the work.

The completed piece should have a a cohesive concept, solidly executed and clearly communicated, be well-crafted and visually engaging.  Paint should be the primary medium used.
