Art 340, Series Project:

The second half of the course will be spent developing a small body of work.  You will complete three painting projects, all related through concept and approach.

Consider:

What ties an artist’s body of work together?

For instance, Kehinde Wiley paints the human figure against ornate, vibrant, Arts and Crafts patterned backgrounds.  This creates visual consistency.  On the other hand, Katie Paterson works with a variety of materials.  Her work is connected by concept (deep time and space) and format. Georgia O’Keeffe’s style is instantly recognizable.  What makes it so?

Ask the following questions as you begin to develop your idea:

What content am I interested in developing?  What themes do I already see repeating in my work? What painting techniques/approaches would I like to explore?

Series Proposal: Your series proposal should be approximately 1000 words and include the following:

-Explain the concept you will investigate through painting.  What is your theme?  How are you exploring it with depth and unique vision?

-How, formally, will you explore your theme?  What is the scale of your paintings?  Why did you choose that scale?  What surface will you paint on?  Why did you choose it? Describe the palette you plan to use.

–Name two contemporary artists who will serve as inspiration for your project.  Describe their work and identify has drawn you to the work. At least one of these artists should be a painter.  Art 21 is a good resource for contemporary artists.  More details about this section of the proposal will be presented in class.

Bring all materials needed to begin work to class on Wednesday, March 13Also, check out books about your inspiration artists from the library and bring them to the studio to use as references.  Plan ahead—you may need to request books through document delivery.

This proposal is worth a full project grade. Plan to workshop your idea in small groups on Monday, March 13.
